There is no cure for AMD; however, there are a variety of treatments pioneered at Vision Care of Maine that slow or even reverse the progression of this devastating disease. No two patients are alike in regard to the treatment.
The one constant in our success is the early detection of the disease and regular follow up before vision loss commences. We use a diagnostic test to show symptoms before the patient would notice distortions or
wavy lines in their vision.
This new advancement in diagnostics is only
found at Vision Care of Maine and
only 500 of these devices are used worldwide.
Individuals over 50 years of age with a
family history of AMD should be tested
and followed at least once per year.
Thousands of Americans go blind from diabetic eye disease. Making diabetes the leading cause of new cases of blindness among people between the ages of 20 and 74.
Early detection, monitoring and treatment help reduce the development of vision loss or blindness by half. If you have diabetes, you must have your vision checked and a detailed examination of your retinas
evaluated by an ophthalmologist. Early signs of damage can
only be
seen by a physician even before you notice
any change in your vision.
At Vision Care of Maine, we utilize an
advanced
diagnostic platform affording
our patients the
early warning of retina
disease they need
while sharing our
findings and test results
with the primary
care physician.
It is important that the diabetic patient
have their eyes examined at least once
per year or as directed by their doctor.
A complete eye exam involves a series of tests designed to evaluate your vision and check for eye diseases. Our doctors use state of the art diagnostic instruments, aim bright lights directly at your eyes, and request that you look through a seemingly endless array of lenses. Each test while at your eye exam evaluates different aspects of your vision and overall ocular health.
At your eye exam: Your doctor will most likely dilate your
pupils to
examine your retina and ocular nerve.
Complete History: It is important to know
systemic and previous ocular disease or
trauma as indication of either current or
future eye disease.
Eye Health: External examination of
the eye includes evaluation of the cornea,
eyelids,
conjunctiva and surrounding
eye tissue.
Slit lamp exam of the eye
includes lens, retina and posterior
section of the eye to determine
disease.
Visual
Acuity: Both computer and
doctor assisted to determine your best
near and distance vision. Your vision
will also be tested with
and without
the correction of glasses.
By the time a glaucoma patient is symptomatic 90% of the damage to the eye and the optic nerve has been done. Regular exams will rule out the presence of the disease. Patients with a family history of glaucoma should be seen and evaluated carefully to detect the disease at its earliest stage.
At Vision Care of Maine our diagnostic services utilize advanced optic nerve and angle scanning devices to achieve this early diagnosis.
Studies and success with our patients is proving that
the combination of this early detection and
glaucoma laser procedures
are proving that
this disease can be managed with minimal
vision loss and the reduction of many
expensive drug therapies.
Retinal diseases specifically affect the retina, a layer of tissue at the back of the eye that is responsible for vision. These diseases also can affect the macula (area of central vision) or the fovea at the center of the macula. Many retinal diseases share common treatments, but all have unique characteristics.
At Vision Care of Maine we provide positive
surgical outcomes for retinal detachment,
macular holes, retinal tear, and macular
pucker.
Each of these retinal diseases should be
treated as emergency conditions to
avoid loss of sight and to restore vision.
